“The word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8)
Welcome to the start of a new series.
This post works off one simple premise: God’s word is powerful. And if you don’t believe me, let me just discredit your objections in advance. I’ll just throw some truth your way:
“The LORD merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born” (Psalm 33:6). We know a God who “calls into existence the things that do not exist” (Romans 4:17). It was “at the blast of his breath, that the bottom of the earth could be seen, and the foundations of the earth were laid bare” (2 Samuel 22:16).
God is “sustaining all things by the power of his word” (Hebrews 1:3). The hum of the generator powering the whole universe is every word that the comes from the mouth of God. And we have at our disposal this same word of God, that which is “living and active, sharper than a two edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12). Knowing that “all scripture is God-breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16-17) and “spoken that our joy may be full” (John 15:11).
God’s word sits on a shelf. And he intendeds it not be a proficient dust collector. Because God’s word doesn’t just sustain the whole universe (although that alone boasts an impressive resume). God also intends his word be personally, individually, life changing. Given so we can claim no condemnation (Romans 8:1) and fullness of life (John 10:10).
I don’t boast much experience. But I can boast in God’s word. So. Having said all of that. Here’s three absolute gems of God’s word that have really hit home for me.

PSALM 18:1
“I love you, O LORD, you are my strength”
Such a small verse.
And yet, so packed with meaning. This verse is a place I love turning to. Whenever I need help. Whenever I need strength. Whenever I need courage. Whenever I need patience. In all different types of situations and conversations: Psalm 18:1 is where my mind drifts. And one situation sticks out in my memory like a sore thumb.
Earlier this year I took on a challenge. I left home on my bike. Aiming to ride 430km (267 miles) in 24 hours. The whole thing was ridiculous – but it was in the early hours of the morning that I struggled the most. I was really hurting. The cold was almost unbearable. Gusts of wind seriously felt like needles to the skin. And it was in these moment of struggle, these hours of unbelievable cold, that I caught myself whispering a sentence.
I love you, O LORD…
This verse just kept running through my head. And with my head bent over the handlebars and legs turning over the pedals, I started saying it out loud to myself. Over and over. I rarely departed from it until the sun came up. There was no way I was going to remove the broken record of Psalm 18:1 off of the turntables of my mind.
Because it was my prayer. And honestly – I couldn’t think of anything more to add to it. Psalm 18:1 described everything perfectly. It gave me incredible comfort. And so as I pedalled through the dark and freezing, I held this verse tight. And I didn’t let it go.
And God never let go of me.
MATTHEW 5:3
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven”
This verse marks a rich milestone for me.
When I consider Bible verses that have changed the trajectory of my life, Matthew 5:3 stands alone. No exaggeration. This verse marks a significant time where my love for God in and through his word began to burst at the seams.
It began to hit me in my first year at university. I was just beginning to listen to a preacher by name of John Piper. And so on the commute to university each day, the earphones would be out and I’d tune into his series on the Beatitudes. But of all the sermons and sections of the Beatitudes, Matthew 5:3 struck me like nothing else.
Blessed are the poor in spirit. Through this part of the verse, I came to realise that before God even my “good deeds are as filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6). I came to realise that the only right response to a totally just and holy God is to acknowledge and see myself as broken, depraved, and lacking. A sobering realisation should the verse end there. But it doesn’t.
For theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Totally contrasting, but not contradicting this realisation, is the promise superseding Matthew 5:3. It is seriously staggering stuff. To those who throw themselves at the feet of Jesus in depravity and in desperation, the Kingdom of Heaven is not just a suggestion. It is a promise you can bank your life on.
Nobody enters heaven on their own merits. In fact, those who enter heaven will recognise the big red F circled and stamped on their report card. And simultaneously turn in trust to he who ran the race, died in our place, and extends blood-bought grace.
What a King! What a Saviour!
PSALM 73:25-26
“Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
This one means a heck of a lot to me.
Not that it necessarily means more (in and of itself). It has just meant more to me. Many nights these words have been the last to leave my lips for the day. The word retreat comes to mind. I bunker down in the bulletproof fortress of Psalm 73:25-26 often.
I seriously love this corner of God’s word.
It begins with an amazing statement. Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. Nothing in heaven or earth – not the heights of heaven, or the riches of the world – can compare to God. Nothing more to gain. Nothing more to get. God is the ultimate reality to which we live and breathe. God is the highest good in the whole universe. This is the creed and conviction of Psalm 73:25.
Psalm 73:26 moves from conviction to implication. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. What an amazing contrast and hope for the Christian. We will fail. But our God never will. In the words of A.W Tozer, “How completely satisfying to turn from our limitations to a God who has none.”
I don’t know who you are. And I don’t know what your life is like. But if you are in Christ, this is absolute gold. You might lose your whole family, your wealth, and your health in a single day (shoutout to Job). You might completely fail at this thing called life.
But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

How has God been speaking to you recently? Feel free to drop a verse below and explain how it has impacted you in some way!
I’ll kick things off. An absolute legend that I do mentoring with sent me one recently. Comes from John 5:24. “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life”
Here’s what he had to say:
“I just found this verse and instantly loved it because it tells us that even though we will stuff up, God still loves us. However, this verse is also is amazing because as it told me that God will forever love me, it also became clearer that when we give our life to God, we find that his laws aren’t just something we need to follow, but also something we want to follow. The words he gives become more then just laws and rules, but passions that we hope to follow to the fullest”

Thank you for sharing! So encouraging!
Hosea 14:4 “I will heal their apostasy; I will love them freely, for my anger has turned from them.”
A friend of mine has rejected God and is against Jesus now, though he once called himself a Christian. This verse is referring to Israel, but all the same, it reminds me of God’s patience and His love for the apostate. It is my prayer that his apostasy be healed.

Love this!! Such a powerful thing to be praying for others over and through scripture. In regards to God’s patience, we get an amazing portrait in Matthew 5:44-45 too. Keep holding those verses tight and praying to God for your friend! “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all that we ask or think…” (Ephesians 3:20)

So many… one that really struck me recently in the JPS translation of the Bible (often used in Messianic congregations) was: Revelation 3:19 – “As for Me, I rebuke and discipline everyone I love; so exert yourselves and turn from your sins!” In that translation, it was a reminder of how great is His love and how much effort it will require of me to continually turn from my sin. I also love the section of Psalm 73 you mentioned, Psalm 16, Psalm 119:94, HUGE chunks of Hebrews 12 (many of which are nice complements to the Revelation verse I mentioned), etc. etc.

Ah yep they’re some awesome verses!! I love Psalm 16 too. Absolute cracker that one. Same with the Hebrews 12 section you mentioned. Thanks heaps for sharing those with us Heather! 🙂

As in the beginning God still creates through His word. It’s the means of our sanctification. His word is a lamp unto our feet so that we don’t stumble. And a light unto our path that we might see where we are going. Blessed are the humble who worship the Father in spirit and in truth.

How about Deuteronomy 20:13 –
And when the Lord your God delivers it into your hands, you shall strike every male in it with the edge of the sword. But the women, the little ones, the livestock, and all that is in the city, all its spoil, you shall plunder for yourself; and you shall eat the enemies’ plunder which the Lord your God gives you. Thus you shall do to all the cities which are very far from you, which are not of the cities of these nations.

Psalm 46:10 – Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
When all is chaos around me, this verse sets my feet on solid ground. Through all the din of sorrow and trouble, this verse gives me roots. His sovereignty is complete – even over the heathen and through the mess that is this earth.

Thank you, Jonathan. God has touched the core of your being and is working marvels in and through you. Broken – yes! Like all of us but you are committed to walking with Our Lord.
One of my favorite Psalms: Psalm 51 – “Have mercy on me, O God, in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offense. O wash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin.”
And the Good News is that He does!

Spot on Andre!! I actually just read that Psalm this morning. Such an awesome one to turn to and trust in – the kindness, compassion, and cleansing work of God – now predicated in the work of Christ. What a King! What a Saviour!

Bravo, John! Isn’t it amazing to find so much power behind mere words? I could feel your excitement, awe, and reverence you have for God behind your words as much as you have felt His power behind His words. Thus, the words we speak have power to move hearts of humility…and soften mountains of stubbornness. They lift, correct, encourage, embolden, urge, inspire, forgive. Our words give voice to our spirit and heart…and when we’re moved upon by the Holy Spirit…our voice can give voice to what God impresses to our heart and mind. Very good insights, my friend.☺

Hi Johnathan, I just wanted to thank you for the like on my first ever blog post. It’s truly amazing how God works and it’s amazing that we as followers can express the goodness of God in such a platform.
A verse that has really caught my attention recently is John 4:13-14: Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Love it! I’m pretty passionate about the situation of poverty and relieving/removing it. I’ll be (God willing) heading up an annual bike ride to raise money in funding for poor communities. I’ve started a separate blog for it at http://www.escapethestate.wordpress.com 🙂 I’ve also got a Facebook page in prep for next year. Feel free to get around that if you want too!

Hi there! My name’s Sophie. A verse which meant a lot to me that I read last night was Psalm 113v7 ‘He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill…’ I feel like I’ve been ‘down and out’ for such a long time. I feel like I’m stuck down a really deep well and I just want God to pick me up out of it. So this verse meant that to me. Please have a look at my blog posts on Christianity (if you have time!) They are the earliest posts on my blog, as I’ve recently started doing poetry too. I loved the passion with which you talked about God’s word, by the way, and thought they were great examples.

So many verses have so greatly ministered to my heart lately. It’s hard to pick one. Micah 7:7-11 (end of the chapter really) has been especially meaningful.
Jesus reminded me of Psalm 46:5, God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved. God shall help her at break of day.
He is in my midst, the very middle of me. He is my core. Wow!!! And because He is central to life (Apart from Me you can do nothing. John 15:5) I won’t be moved.
That makes a girl shout GLORY!!!!
Thanks for liking my Identity Matters post!
